More than 34 % of all employees will not return to the offices, be prepared!

It has been more than a year since a vast number of companies transitioned employees from working offices to home offices. The opinion and outlook regarding working from a home office have changed dramatically since then, and companies have had to find effective solutions to managing their teams outside of working offices.

Before the pandemic, the home office was often considered an employee benefit, and only a small portion of employees worked primarily from home. However, the home office is now an established employment standard that will remain long after the end of the pandemic, as proven by numerous international studies and predictions. According to the European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA), in Germany, the home office was used by 12 % of employees before the pandemic, but in April 2020 the percentage rose to 35 % during the lockdown. We can also see a similar trend in the USA.

The Enterprise Technology Research (ETR) predicts that the percentage of employees who will work permanently in the home office will double from 16.4 % in 2020 to 34.4 % in 2021 due to the many benefits that remote work brings.

While commuting daily to work may be in decline for many companies, work offices will not disappear completely. They offer ideal spaces for social interaction, cooperation and conferences, and more comfortable personal meetings. Also, there is an opportunity to share offices between companies, thus saving costs. It can be assumed that the future work standard will be a combined form that involves a combination or alternation of remote work and in-office work.

There are many reasons why the home office has increased in popularity not only among employees but also among management. For example, the results of a recent survey conducted by Buffer and AngelList! in 2020 examined the experience of 3,500 respondents from around the world regarding remote work.

The biggest benefits of working from home, according to the respondents:
    • Ability to have a flexible schedule (32%)
    • Flexibility to work from anywhere (26%)
    • Not having to commute (21%)
    • Ability to spend time with family (11%)
    • Ability to work from home (7%)
    • Other (3%)

The biggest negatives of working from home, according to the respondents:
    • Lack of cooperation and communication (20%)
    • Loneliness (20%)
    • Not being able to unplug (18%)
    • Distractions at home (12%)
    • Colleagues are in a different time zone (10%)
    • Difficulty staying motivated (7%)
    • Taking vacation time (5%)
    • Finding reliable Wi-Fi (3%)
    • Other (5%)

The high level of flexibility of working from a home office and the time spent on the commute are great benefits for employees. It can also bring certain benefits for companies. One of them is the potential savings on part of the cost of running the office. In addition, with the right coordination and communication of the team to the home office, work productivity does not have to be reduced.

However, the productivity of work is precisely what many managers are concerned about, as revealed in a study carried out by OWL Labs. Managers are most often afraid that working from home will result in reduced productivity and concentration of their employees. Reducing the presence of all employees in the office environment can also, according to many, reduce the team cohesiveness and affect the corporate culture, which is important for the success of the entire company.

The home office was, is, and will always be here, and it is likely to be used by more people and for more working hours than we expected even just a few years ago.

The sooner companies address this situation with a good solution that allows them to effectively coordinate the entire team and all projects no matter where their individual members are, the better it will be for companies. This applies to both a financial point of view and to the subject of team cohesion.

Good solutions must certainly include the implementation of a single system that allows you to completely manage the team, projects, and shared data and communication of the entire team. This type of solution will certainly provide great administrative relief and allow for easier cooperation for companies.  Instead of a mix of various incompatible or hard-to-connect applications, companies can deal with just one system to handle every aspect of their business.

One complete solution is the Teamogy cloud system.
